Vancouver’s newest strategy to address the housing crisis allows homeowners in select neighborhoods to convert single-family homes into multi-unit, multi-family properties, all while preserving the heritage appearance of the homes. These conversions are officially known as Multiple Conversion Dwellings (MCDs).
The units in these developments can be converted into individual condos, commonly referred to as strata in BC. According to the BC government, “Strata housing is often called condos or condominiums, but it encompasses more than just apartment-style units. It can include duplexes, townhouses, fractional vacation properties, and even single-family homes within bare land strata corporations (‘strata subdivisions’). In strata housing, owners hold individual ownership of their strata lots while jointly owning the common property and assets as part of a strata corporation.”
